Job DescriptionDepartment: Professional Apprentice Program Reports To: Director of Professional Apprentice Program Exempt or Non-Exempt: Non-Exempt Description: This full-time apprenticeship offers hands-on stage management experience in a creative environment, supporting live performances and events at Juilliard. Working closely with various departments, the apprentice gains knowledge in stage management, contributing to the overall success of Juilliard's programming. Reporting to the Director of the Professional Apprentice Program, ideal candidates possess a passion for performing arts, strong organizational skills, effective communication, previous theater-related experience, and a willingness to learn and adapt to various aspects of stage management. The salary is $17.39 per hour or a contracted amount of $27,824 for the school year. The schedule operates on rehearsal and performance calendars, requiring weekend availability, with flexibility for hybrid work during prep time. On-campus presence is expected as per the schedule. About our Stage Management Apprentice Team: Our collaborative and dedicated team of ten stage management apprentices is known for its commitment to excellence. The apprentice will collaborate closely with various teams, including Dance, Drama, Vocal Arts, freelance Production Stage Managers, Production Management, Recital Operations, and potentially with the Office of the President or other Special Projects. Tailored opportunities with Production Shops will be arranged based on the apprentice's interests. Key outcomes for the Stage Management Apprentice include: Opportunities as Production Stage Manager, Calling Stage Manager, and Assistant Stage Manager roles across diverse performances. Developing expertise in dance, drama and opera production, including terminology and paperwork. Gaining exposure to various concert types and events, collaborating with Production Management and Recital Operations teams. Role Responsibilities: Communication and Logistics: Facilitate seamless communication among production team, ensuring smooth collaboration. Act as a liaison for effective communication between the production team, cast, and crew, including contacting student and guest performers in the event they are delayed. Attend and contribute to production meetings, rehearsals, and performances to uphold production integrity, acting as a liaison between the production team, cast, and crew, relaying important information in a clear and timely manner. Manage all paperwork for assigned productions, maintaining logs and addressing logistical concerns. Rehearsals and Performances: Prepare rehearsal and performance spaces, addressing and alerts technical difficulties and ensuring safety protocols. Oversee choreographed fight and intimacy details for safe execution. Assist in rehearsals by organizing actors, crew, and technical elements and taking detailed notes. Contribute to the organization of props, costumes, and production materials, supporting setup and breakdown. Work backstage during performances to ensure smooth transitions and cue execution. Minimum Requirements: Passion and basic knowledge of the intended craft. Bachelor's Degree, or related professional experience and transferable skills, or a combination of both. Technical stagecraft knowledge and familiarity with theatrical production logistics, including understanding script and stage directions. Willingness to learn and take direction from the Stage Manager and other team members involved in production or project. Highly organized, detail-oriented, with effective time-management and prioritization skills. Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team setting. Demonstrated adherence to professional conduct reflecting positively on the profession. Knowledge of proper production safety procedures, with flexibility to work varying hours, including evenings and weekends, in office, theatrical, and non-theatrical settings. Preferred Background: Bachelor's Degree in Theater, Performing Arts, or a related field is a plus. Previous stage management experience in theater, events, music, opera, or dance. Proficiency in reading music. Computer skills, including familiarity with Q-lab, VectorWorks reader, and Adobe products.
