The ideal candidate will have the emotional, technical and operational chops necessary to strategize, build, motivate, innovate, and lead teams to create, deliver and maintain high quality direct to consumer products.We seek a passionate, intrinsically motivated, curious and mission-driven Director of Engineering to come on as a driving force behind the organization's technology strategy. As a member of the Engineering leadership team reporting directly to the CTO, you will lead engineering efforts for Understood's backend, mobile, and data functions. You will own the building of scalable products, psychologically safe environments, healthy teams, and processes. You are a strong communicator and relationship builder, and take pride in building high trust relationships with your stakeholders and leaders to achieve company goals collectively.This is a hybrid role that requires a minimum of three (3) days a week in our NYC office, with a focus on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.What you'll doOwn and develop a high-level strategic vision for engineering at UnderstoodPartner with product and business stakeholders to translate high-level strategic vision into a clear and actionable development roadmapCollaborate across functional areas to define, prioritize and execute initiatives that improve core technology in support of business needs, efficiencies and revenueTranslate technical concepts to non-technical business stakeholders and translate business objectives to the engineering teamParticipate in recruitment, performance assessments, training, and career development; you are responsible for all headcount planning and personnel evolution for multiple areas within the engineering organizationBuild and evolve a healthy, happy and motivated engineering teamBe metrics and performance driven; define healthy SLOs and maintain SLIs and coach the team to be data drivenSupport technical research, innovation and lead the creation, continual refinement, and active enforcement of our development standards in order to ensure that our technology can be leveraged as a sustainable competitive advantageBe willing and able to jump in to help debug and triage critical systems as neededElevate technical architecture by asking the right questions to ensure architecture matches business needs for the areaManage vendor and external relationships for the organization, make build vs buy decisions, participate in the budgeting process and own your department's budgetMust-haves10+ years of demonstrated experience working in software engineering5+ years of demonstrated experience working as an individual contributor3+ years of experience recruiting and managing a team of engineersEgo-free and highly collaborative; mostly acts in a coach leadership role and open to flexing into the player role when need beClear communicator with an ability to effectively convey strategic risk, opportunities and tradeoffs to executive team and stakeholders; serve as a bridge between business and technologyA natural leader; a "lead by influence" team player with the ability to inspire confidence in others and connect business goals to the workEmpathetic with your approach; you understand and value the differences in people and are invested in people's growth"All hands on deck" and roll-up-your sleeves attitude; you wholly own your squads outputsQualities of an entrepreneur who can operate and scale effectively in a high growth and cross-functional environment to take products from zero to mitted to embodying and being a steward of our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belongingNice-to-havesExperience with React NativeExperience with Google Cloud PlatformExperience with both iOS and Android native ecosystemExperience with data warehousing concepts and technologiesExperience collaborating with data science teams to integrate ML modelsThe base salary range for this role is minimum $220,000-$270,000 maximum, depending on years of experience and qualifications.
