For more information on our Equity, Diversity, Inclusion Council, please click on the Summary of ResponsibilitiesAs an Annual Renewable Assistant Professor in the School of Transportation, you will teach, develop materials and experiences, and manage a classroom and lab facility that provides students with the basic skills that are required to enter the automotive industry as a technician in a dealership, independent shop or fleet facility using the standards put forth by LWTech and the National Automotive Technician Education Foundation (NATEF). The ideal candidate will be able to combine technical expertise with supportive and collaborative learning attitudes and behavioral modeling that is formative to our students' success. Managing lab facilities and budgets to sustain the program and working as part of a collaborative team with other faculty and staff are key components in this position. This position reports to the program dean. The technical expertise that this person brings will be from the automotive industry that possesses a minimum of 5 years full time experience in the field, in addition to a record of formal transportation training exemplified by AAS attainment, journeyman level apprenticeship, or formal dealership training.This position is subject to funding approval for the 2025-2026 academic year. If not approved, this posting may be cancelled ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Model and teach productive and constructive work habits and attitudes, safety, study skills, industry performance standards and core skills as identified by the collegeDevelop and incorporate instructional methods, curriculum and modes that support best learning practices and adapt to varied learner populations, preparing students to be work-ready graduatesDevelop and maintain classroom and lab processes and procedures, including safety, that follow local, state, and federal policies and procedures; share responsibility for educational facilities and equipment; repair and maintain shop equipment and tools as neededDevelop and assess program, curriculum, and educational outcomes; keep accurate learning and program records so that data supports decisions in grading and program evaluationCommunicate expectations and establish clear grading criteria through standard instruments such as syllabi, and provide clear, timely feedbackHold students accountable to behavioral expectations that align with building industry skill sets and follow campus policies; deal consistently and fairly with all studentsWork with internal and external counselors, and others supporting students to create high retention, completion and placement rates for all automotive studentsWork as a highly effective team member in collaboration with other department faculty and staff to create learning that produces graduates who are highly sought after by industry related to the department's programsAdvise students on educational and career planning; assist in connecting students with industryDevelop and maintain industry and community support for the Automotive Repair program by actively engaging with industry; advisory committee meetings and seeking industry guidance to provide program and sector advice; maintain relationships with local employers, feeder programs, businesses and organizations that relate to this fieldDevelop new skills directed at program needs; pursue professional development activities to stay current in both teaching and in transportation knowledge. Skills must be in all phases of the occupationDevelop and maintain relationships with feeder programs, trade apprenticeships, and related bachelor's opportunities along the complete educational pathway for this program. Evaluate, monitor, and direct the work of other program staff as assigned including, Instructional Support Technicians, volunteers and work-study studentsEngage in budget development, grant planning and program budget expenditures to best meet program needs and anticipate growth; participate in marketing and in outreach to new audiences to assure program sustainability and growthParticipate with campus individuals who are creating and implementing grants, scholarship, and direct donations to the programActively participate as a team member in program management and campus initiatives; be familiar with and advance the college's mission, vision, and goals and how they relate to the Automotive Repair Technician program; attend and participate in department and college meetings as appropriate; participate in college accreditation, program review and college committees as specified in the faculty bargained agreementCreate, nurture and contribute to effective and harmonious relationships with the department team through communication, teamwork and sharing of duties and interdependenceMaintain regular office hours; respond effectively and promptly to student inquiries, inquiries from the general public and to division and college personnelPerform other professional activities as approved by the dean In addition, full-time faculty will also:Take part in college accreditation, program review, and college committees as specified in the faculty bargained agreementPerform other professional activities as approved by the Dean of Industrial Technology QUALIFICATIONS An earned AAS degree in Automotive Technology from an accredited college or equivalent.Hold or be able to obtain ASE Master status within six months of employmentHold or be eligible to obtain a state professional-technical certificate to teach in the automotive repair areaTwo years full-time related industry work experience as an automotive technician in a dealership, independent shop or fleet environmentValid First Aid certificate (with Blood-borne Pathogens and CPR) required upon hireValid driver's license and ability to perform as a driver on Washington state highwaysExcellent written and verbal communication skills and be committed to customer serviceMust be able to use computing resources for communication, grading, resource retrieval, and teachingpreparing of educational componentsWillingness to participate on college, division, or department committeesDemonstrated ability to work successfully with students, staff and community from diverse backgrounds, including those whose native language is not English, and a commitment to a culturally diverse work environmentPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor degree from an accredited collegePrior adult instruction experience in a technical field or under NATEF guidelinesPrior knowledge of or has participated in NATEF accreditationRelated industry work experience as an automotive technician in the European vehicle arena such as, dealerships, independent shops or in a fleet environment SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION Compensation & Work Schedule This position is for the 2025-2026 Academic year and begins September 2025. Placement on the faculty salary schedule is based on an individual assessment of education and experience. This positions ranges from $78,347-$89,936 per year; salary is for an academic year (173 days) and as may be adjusted according to the faculty bargained agreement. Summer quarter employment may be available based on student enrollment. This is a full-time, Annual Renewable position with the possibility of converting to tenure track.
