Under general supervision, assist in performing a variety of functions pertaining to student health appraisal; assist in the care of ill or injured students; assist in care of orthopedically handicapped, severely handicapped and other health impaired students; administer routine first aid and emergency treatment; and do other related work as required.Duties and Responsibilities The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that might be performed. Assist with preparation of a variety of examinations pertaining to the health appraisal of students including physical, vision and hearing examinationsRecord health appraisal history and the results of health appraisal examinationsAssist in typing and distributing reports concerning the findings of health appraisals and in health appraisal follow-up activitiesRender first aid treatment to injured and ill studentsSterilize, disinfect and bandage minor cuts, abrasions and burnsObserve pupils for signs of shock and other emergency situations, and take appropriate remedial action following a predetermined procedureTake and record temperatures of ill students, and report the results to health service or administrative personnel as appropriateProvide a quiet, comfortable and calming atmosphere for ill and injured pupilsPerform routine evaluation of student illness and injury situations, and determine the need for emergency, supervisory or administrative assistanceMay give medication prescribed specifically for students by medical authority, following a closely-controlled procedureContact parents or other responsible persons regarding ill or injured studentsMay assist in cleaning and changing of ill students and in the cleaning and disinfecting of the resting areaMay catheterize students in need, and instruct students in self helpMaintain a variety of student records and records pertaining to the health office activitiesMay drive an automobile to multiple assignment locationsMay provide code-authorized health services including but not limited to suctioning, catheterization and gavage feedingInput health data into computer QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of: Principles, methods and practices of first aid and routine emergency treatment, including communicable disease controlStandard policies and procedures pertaining to student health servicesEquipment, supplies and terminology commonly associated with a student health facilityEmergency service agencies within close proximity of the assigned school sitesRecord management, storage and retrieval systems and proceduresAppropriate English usage, punctuation, spelling and grammar Ability to: Perform routine first aid and emergency treatment for ill and injured studentsCommunicate effectively in oral and written formEvaluate student illness or emergency situations and determine an appropriate course of actionEstablish and maintain a variety of files and recordsTypeUnderstand and carry out oral and written directionsEstablish and maintain cooperative working relationshipsUse new equipment and technology as it becomes required to perform this jobAbility to use computerword processorRequirements QualificationsCPRFirst Aid Certification (American Red Cross or American Heart Association )Letter of Introduction (Please include your experience qualifying you for this posiiton)Letter(s) of Recommendation (1-Within the last 12 months)Proof of HS GraduationResumeTyping Certificate (Within the last 6 months. acceptable agencies are; government agency, business or community college, adult school or public school system)Comments and Other InformationThe East Whittier City School District provides educational opportunities (transitional kindergarten through eighth grade, including special education) for approximately 9,000 children.
