This list of duties and responsibilities is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class.Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:Positions in this classification typically perform a full range of duties at a level of complexity represented by the following types of responsibilities:Examines plans and specifications for the construction, alteration and repair of residential, commercial and industrial buildings and structures; Ensures that plans meet the requirements of related building codes, regulations and restrictions; Indicates corrections of structural deficiencies where required; Conducts field inspections to ensure compliance; Responds to verbal and written inquiries; Works at the public counter and responds to questions related to building codes;Provides technical assistance and coordinates plan check activities with other City departments, external engineers, architects, and contractors, outside agencies, and the public; Interprets and explains requirements and restrictions relative to building codes, ordinances, regulations, policies and procedures; Develops alternative methods to comply with requirements and restrictions; May inspect city facilities; Prepares comprehensive correction lists; Reviews structural and energy design calculations; Maintains files and records of specifications, calculations and other pertinent information related to submitted plans; Ensures compliance with all federal and state requirements; Reviews and determines fees associated with development projects; andIssues permits.Knowledge, Skills and Other Characteristics:To perform this job successfully, and individual must be able to perform each essential function. QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:A combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:Education: A Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.Experience: Two (2) years progressively responsible experience checking construction plans of commercial, industrial, and residential structures.LicensingCertification Requirements: Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California. PARS Supplemental Retirement Plan (.5@55) - members pay 100% of the PARS cost through payroll deduction. Plan closed to new bargaining unit members as of 10112. PERS Tier II-2%@60 for individuals employed by the City on or after 123012 who are already PERS members. Tier I and II members pay 8% of pensionable income. Single highest year coordinated with Social Security and Medicare. PERS 2%@62 for new employeesmembers hired on or after 1113. Three year average coordinated with Social Security and Medicare. Members pay 50% of normal cost (6.75%).Medical Contribution: The City provides health plans through CalPERS. The City contributes the minimum monthly amount statutorily required by the Public Employees Medical and Hospital Care Act (PEMHCA). Effective January 1, 2024, the City contribution is $1,750 per month.
