Description Position at The Port Authority of NY & NJ About the RoleJoin one of the most diverse and innovative engineering design teams with multiple specialties within the transportation sector. The Port Authority's airports, ports, ferries, tunnels, bridges, bus terminals and rail transportation systems are important transportation links in the region. The Civil & Environmental Engineering unit within the EngineeringArchitecture Design Division serves a unique role within the Port Authority by providing engineering planning and design services throughout the Agency with close coordination with external stakeholders including Federal, State and local transportation and regulatory agencies.The Principal Engineer, Civil will be primarily responsible for preparing and directingsupervising professional technical staff in preparing design documentsdrawings, preliminary engineering and final design services for projects or studies for a portfolio of infrastructure projects associated with Authority capital and operating projects. The successful candidate will apply their extensive experience of infrastructure including geometrics, rail, utilities, hydraulic modeling andor stormwater management with thorough knowledge of AASHTO, NJDEPNYDEC stormwater, AREMA andor similar standards or guidelines, to develop recommendations for complex projects and programs.ResponsibilitiesProvide expert engineering advice, guidance and recommendations for the assigned facilities for pavements, roadway design elements, utilities, rail andor stormwater management needs. Manage a portfolio of projects including prepare scope of work, solicit proposals and RFPs, critically reviewing consultant proposals, negotiating cost, ensuring schedulebudget compliance. Oversee professional design services and auditing deliverables for scope conformancequality. Supervise a team of engineering professionals and manage resources based on the Program's needs. Provide effective guidance and direction to professional technical staff in design approach, including engineering analysis.Perform Quality AssuranceQuality Control checking of conceptual and engineering studies, designs and contract documents completed by technical staff Ensure that reviews performed by staff perform are in keeping with project requirements and quality standards. Manage staff workload and identify resource needs. Minimum QualificationsBachelors Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering college or university. Licensed to practice Engineering in New York or New Jersey.A minimum of 12 years of engineering experience in design and maintenancerehabilitation strategies for pavements, utilities, geometric design, trackwork, hydraulic modeling and stormwater management.Experience supervising design engineering staff. Demonstrated experience in establishing project plans, setting priorities, coordinating activities, handling multiple tasks simultaneously and delegating tasks and responsibilities that are multi-faceted and complex.Demonstrated leadership skills and experience managing a diverse workforce with varying work backgrounds, expertise, and levels.Demonstrated interpersonal skills interacting with staff at all levels, supporting departments, consultants, and members of outside government and transportation agencies.Thorough knowledge of AASHTO, NJDEPNYDEC stormwater or similar standards and guidelines.Excellent oral and written communication skills.Valid driver's license.Desired QualificationsMasters degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering college or university.Licensed Professional Engineer in both New York and New Jersey.Selection ProcessThe application process varies by position, but typically includes an initial phone interview for qualified candidates, followed by a more in-depth interview(s) andor assessment(s).
