The position will have significant responsibility for decision making and work autonomously within their authority.Job ResponsibilitiesConfirms coverage of claims by reviewing policies and documents submitted in support of claimsAnalyzes coverage and communicates coverage positionsConducts, coordinates, and directs investigation into loss facts and extent of damagesDirects and monitors assignments to experts and outside counselEvaluates information on coverage, liability, and damages to determine the extent of insured's exposureSets reserves within authority or makes claim recommendations concerning reserve changes to managerNegotiates and settles claims either directly or indirectly Prepares reports by collecting and summarizing informationAdheres to Fair Claims Practices regulations and internal Claims Quality Performance ObjectivesAssist in training and mentoring of examinersServes as technical resource to subordinates and others in the organization.Review and approve correspondence, reports and authority requests as directed by managerParticipates in special projects or assists other team members as requestedTravel to mediations, trials, and conferences as requiredRepresents Markel's claims expertise on external panels and industry forumsCoordinates loss information for senior business stakeholders and presents during monthlyquarterly business meetingsContributes to maintenance of claims guidelines and best practice proceduresDelivers technical training to colleagues and external contacts as appropriateEnsures effective vendor and litigation management on claims with a focus on minimizing indemnity exposure and mitigating vendor and legal expenseSteps in for manager to assume managerial duties when manager is unavailable or requires assistanceQualifications Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experienceMust have or be eligible to receive claims adjuster license.Successful achievement of industry designations (INS, IEA, AIC, ARM, SCLA, CPCU)Minimum of 10 years of claims handling experience or equivalent combination of education and experienceSuccessful completion of 5 years as a Senior Claims ExaminerMarkel offers hybrid (3 days in the office and 2 days remote ) and fully remote option for this opening.
