They are qualified, once they undergo training and competency, to work in the various departments of the Laboratory. A clinical laboratory technologist embodies the area of practice defined in Article 165 of NYS Education Law and Tile 10 of NYS Public Health Law. Moreover, the technologists must have a competency assessment signed off by the Department Supervisor or Designee to work.AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIESLaboratory Technologists III, are responsible for:Performs gross description of small and large tissue samples and other specimen submitted to histology under the direction and discretion of Pathologists, as needed.Ability to use tissue processors to load grossed specimens and begin a processing cycle for histology staff.Assists in the preparation of large tissue for pathologists, including basic setup and inking, as needed.Assist in the performance of frozen section, as needed.Writesdictates gross description using voice dictation system andor manual entry with USGERNER and EPIC.Ensures all GERNER specimen labels match the original EPIC labels, paying attention to patient's name, MRN, and body part.Ensures gross descriptions matches the patient sample submitted and are accurately verified and recorded. Communicates with clinicians and pathologists to ensure correct tissue orientation and identification.Maintains ordercleanliness of the Gross Lab. DisposesStoresMaintains specimen containers per department SOPs Participate in -Performance Improvement ActivitiesMeet all compliance•standardsrequirements such as annual physical evaluationassessment, Multi-Star Training, Fire Drill participation, etc.Be responsible for enhancing personal and professional development through attendance at Network training plies with all AP policies and procedures Performs, Record and Maintains all QC Charts and Records for equipment and processes in Grossing Room (8159).Flexibility in handling additional task to meet TAT. departmental, and regulatory compliance such as CAP, DOH, JCHOPossess excellent dexterity and analytic skillsAbility to plan and organize technical work, manage workload, operate technical instruments and equipment and input data.SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESPerforms regular accessioning tests and procedures on small and large tissue samples and other specimen submitted to histology under the direction and discretion of Pathologists to assist in diagnoses and treatment on specimens submitted to the lab (performs bench work)Monitor and data entry and verify patient resultsReviews in-house and reference laboratory incomplete worklistReviews abnormalcritical result queueEnters raw data from instruments into computer systems to identify final resultsRecord results on report forms and laboratory reports (record books, electronic formsbooks)Able to process specimens.Able to prepare and examine slides andor smearsEnsures operation of analyzers and other instruments with calibration and quality controls; performs preventive maintenance following manufacturer's instructions; and troubleshoot instrument issuesUphold the quality control program; as well as, participate in the quality assurance program Reviews when the quality control program is performed by staffParticipates on an individual and as Clinical laboratory technologist in ALL governmental proficiency test programsAdheres to ALL Laboratory and Hospital policies and proceduresOrganizes workflow to facilitate completion of assigned tasksResponds to STAT and routine requests within the expected turnaround timeFollows all NYS DOH, College of American Pathologists, JC, and CMS guidelinesMaintains a safe and clean working environment by following all infection control policies, biosafety policies, and hazardous waste policiesParticipates in Laboratory in-services, continuing education, internalexternal programs for quality control and proficiency required by regulatory agencies, as well as mandatory hospital in-services and trainingDemonstrate knowledge in the use of Laboratory Information System and EPICProvides information to medical providers by answering questions and requestsBe able to package, label, and standardize laboratory media, reagents, and controls to ensure the laboratory has suffice and up-to-date suppliesRecord results of important data on prepared products, or oversee this operationMaintains the necessary documentation and records to comply with JC, CAP, NYS DOH regulatory agenciesBe able to package, label, and standardize laboratory media, reagents, and controls for use during analysesOrders and maintains acceptable amounts of media, reagents, and other supplies (or aids supervisor in this task)Be able to generate reports, enter entries on charts, and maintain data and other records required for daily, weekly, or monthly observationMonitors and maintains inventory- laboratory supplies and equipmentPrepares and monitors requisitions for acquisitionsGenerate technical and other reports on daily, weekly, or monthly basis, as requiredCreatedesign the layouts for charts, logs, and other records, as well as, maintaining these documentsSubmits written andor electronic critiques of test resultsCreateoversee work orders for laboratory repairsMaintains technical competencyMaintains preventative maintenance programPromotes a positive work image through productivity and professional interaction with patients and other hospital personnelPerforms other functions as needed in the event of shortage in personnelPerforms tests andor other complex analysesInvestigates and resolves difficult analyses and interprets resultsPerforms complex tests on specimens; furthermore, record the results in report forms, record books, andor electronic formResponds to written or oral inquiries regarding specialty areas from hospital and laboratory personsUnder direct supervision (outside of the normal scope of practice) performs functions which requires limited technical skillsAble to make minor modifications which stays compliant with accepted laboratory practicesRecords important data in detailMake sure all testing devices are registered at NYSDOH and CAP; conform to standardPerforms other functions as needed in the event of shortage of personnelMinimum Qualifications1. Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist, cytotechnologist, or histotechnologist issued by the addition to meeting the qualification requirement of Assignment Level II, appointment to Level III requires:1. One (1) year of full-time paid experience as a technologist in a clinical laboratory or blood bank.Special Notes:Qualifying experience is not limited to New York State.Candidates that are solely licensed or issued permits to practice as cytotechnologists or histotechnologists may only be assigned work, including supervising personnel performing laboratory work, in a laboratory disciplinespecialty appropriate to their license or permit.
