DescriptionUnder the supervision of the Director of Nursing, the Unit Manager is responsible for the twenty-four hour management of hisher respective nursing unit. The Unit Manager is responsible for all administrative and professional working policies pertaining to hisher section, as well as supervising, coordinating, and delegating the clinical duties and other unit activities, in order to provide quality resident care.The Unit Manager must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the residents served on hisher unit - adult through geriatric. The Unit Manager must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span; possess the ability to assess data reflective of the resident's status; interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each resident's requirements relative to their age-specific needs; and to provide the care needed as described in the Nursing Department's policies and procedures.Type of supervision exercised: full. Jobs reporting to this position: RN, LPN, CNA, Restorative Aides, Unit Secretary.EDUCATION:Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program required.Bachelor's degree from an accredited Nursing Program or Healthcare Management preferred. WORK EXPERIENCE:Minimum of three (3) years work experience as a Registered Nurse in a Long Term Care or Med Surg setting required.Minimum of one (1) year supervisory experience required.SPECIAL EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:Must be cleared by PA State Police Criminal History Check.CPR Certification required or must be obtained and must be maintained.Possession of a current license as a Registered Nurse as issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Nurse Examiners.Good management skills required.Good verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills required for effective interaction with staff, residents and visitors.Must have demonstrated administrative ability, supervisory capabilities and reliability.Must be able and willing to be available for daily twenty-four (24) hour call.Must possess knowledge of Federal and State Regulations.PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Moderate Work: duties require exerting up to 25 lbs. of force occasionally (approx 10-33% of shift), andor up to 10lbs. of force frequently (approx 33-66% of the time), andor a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, and move objects (i.e., occasional patient transfers).Position involves bending, reaching, stooping and lifting (occasionally in strained position) throughout shift.Ability to transport self throughout facility is required.ACCIDENT OR HEALTH HAZARDS:Occasional exposure to blood and body substances.Exposure to needle sticks possible. WORKING CONDITIONS:Works in a well-lit nursing unit, which includes: nurses station, resident rooms, treatment areas, etc.CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES OF JOB:E = Essential Element NE = Nonessential Element 15% Responsible for twenty-four hour clinical and staff management, clinical follow-up of residents, and problem situations on the nursing unit. Sets specific standards and objectives for the nursing unit. In the absence of the Director of Nursing, assumes supervision of the Nursing Department. (E)15% Performs all duties and functions of an RN. Assesses resident conditions and nursing needs, sets goals, and prescribes appropriate nursing action to meet the physical, psychological, social, and geriatric needs of the resident. Participates in care conferences and development of individual care plans. Assigns nursing care to team members in accordance with the resident's needs and the staff's capabilities and qualifications. Directs maintenance of resident care records. (E)10% Assists in establishing lines of authority and responsibility in defining duties of nursing personnel to assure departmental objectives are accomplished, and standards of nursing care are maintained. Promotes positive relationships and acts as liaison between resident, family, physician and resident care team. Reports to Director of Nursing any resident or staff related problem for review and appropriate action. Seeks assistance from appropriate resource person as necessary in solving clinical and management problems. (E)10% Assists with assessing compliance with and is involved with inspection by regulatory agencies. (E)10% Directs maintenance of resident care records, performs chart reviewspeer reviews to monitor documentation for accuracy and completion. Assures documentation meets required standards. Completes reporting requirements for appropriate committees. (E)5% Ensures that physician's orders are transcribed and carried out. (E)5% Assists in evaluating nursing and related services rendered to improve quality of resident care. Coordinates nursing peer review and QI within the unit. Participates on committees and program development meetings. (E)5% Evaluates andor assists in evaluation of nursing personnel in performance appraisals, for promotions, transfer and disciplinary action. Develops staff skills through orientation, in-services, teaching, demonstration and encouragement of professional growth. (E) 5% Assists in development of nursing department goals and objectives. Assists in formulating policies and procedures of the nursing department and Allied Services and assures proper implementation. Communicates changes in policy, procedure and other matters to staff and provides feedback from staff to nursing administration. (E)5% Promotes and maintains harmonious relationships among nursing personnel and with medical staff, residents and public. Confers with supervisors, managers, and department heads to discuss improvement of employee working relationships, conditions and morale. (E)5% Monitors environment for potential safety risks to residents, visitors and staff. Assists in reporting, investigating, documenting and assuring follow up resident safety issues. (E)5% Assists with orientation process and clinical competency process. (E)2% Ensures coordination of staff education between staff and staff development. (E)1% Assumes responsibility as a self-directed professional for continuing education through independent study and education programs based on individual identified needs. (NE) 1% Ensures proper and economic use of supplies, equipment, etc., for maintaining resident care. (NE)1% Participates on various committees in corporate-wide programs. (NE)SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITES: Part 1 30% Responsible for 24 hours management of their respective unit, including crisis intervention. 20% Formulates, interprets, communicates, and assures follow through of the department policies and procedures. Reviews policies and procedures regularly, assuring accuracy and compliance with standards. 20% Directs and delegates management of professional and ancillary nursing personnel. Assists in establishing lines of authority, seeking assistance from appropriate resource person as necessary in solving clinical and management problems. In the absence of the Director of Nursing assumes supervision of Nursing Department. 15% Demonstrates leadership by the ability to influence the activity of others in a desired direction. Relates and interacts with others in a positive way that results in cooperation, mutual respect, and common benefit. Sets an example to establish credibility, thereby inspiring their trust and loyalty.
