School CounselorClassification: Exempt, 10-Month EmployeeReports to: Director of Counseling OverviewDr. Richard Izquierdo Health and Science Charter School is seeking a certifiedlicensed School Counselor to support and educate our students. Under the general supervision of the Director of School Counseling, the school counselor works with students to develop and implement plans around academic and social-emotional success. School counselors work with the school community, including scholars, families, staff, and school leadership to advocate for programs and services that positively impact scholar academic success in alignment with New York State. The counselor is responsible for one grade level of students and is part of a robust mental health and counseling team at the school. General ResponsibilitiesThe school counselor supervises students in the areas of social-emotional, academic and college counseling for a specific grade level, working as part of a larger mental health team to support the studentsWork collaboratively with the clinical social work team to respond to crises and provide individualized support plansDevelop and implement individualized academic plans for all students on your caseloadProvide support to students struggling with peer relationships, coping strategies, and effective social skillsConduct group or individual counseling sessions, both mandated and unmandated, and submit all required notes and documentation by the required deadlinesEffectively conduct crisis intervention and social-emotional assessmentsContribute to improving student attendance by conducting wellness calls, tracking attendance parent meetings and maintain focus on increased graduation ratesAssess and refer students for multi-tiered level supportAbility to leverage resources to comply with the school counseling program (PowerSchool and SESIS)Engage and collaborate with colleagues and the community to develop and sustain a common culture that supports high expectations for student learningEncourage parental involvement in students' education and ensure effective communication with students and parentsCooperate with parents and teachers as well as other interested partiesFacilitate access to community resourcesIntegrate into the established policies and culture of the departmentOther duties as assigned Professional ExpectationsUphold the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) professional standardsHighly organized, motivated, self-driven team playerWork effectively with staff, scholars, and the communityOrganize tasks, set priorities and meet policies and deadlinesRespond appropriately to evaluation and changes in the work settingWillingness to learn and grow professionallyExcellent oral and written communication skillsExcellent punctuality and attendance at workQualificationsMasters in School Counseling or Social Work from an accredited institution requiredNew York State certification requiredFluent in Spanish required3 to 5 years of demonstrated success working in urban school settings- preferredSupervisory ResponsibilitiesNonePosition Type and Expected Hours of Work This is a full-time 10-month position. This is an On-Site position; no hybrid or remote.
