The arraignment supervisor maintains front line responsibility for the office's provision of client services in the Criminal Court Day arraignment part. The supervisor will provide supervision at Queens Criminal Court on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM or whenever the shift is completed.ESSENTIAL DUTIESRESPONSIBILITIESMonitor and distribute CDP arraignment case attorney intakeMonitor and distribute conflict cases to other providersAssist attorneys in addressing substantive issues of cases to be arraigned, including trouble shooting over 24-hour arrest to arraignment time cases and unusual volume of online arrest cases to be arraignedAttend regularly scheduled stakeholder meetings with external agenciesMonitor physical conditions of both courtrooms and holding areasPrepare daily arraignment reportsQUALIFICATIONSMinimum of five years as a criminal defense attorneyFelony certified for a minimum of three years prior to applyingComprehensive knowledge of criminal and constitutional law, statutory interpretation, and ethical principles contained in the Code of Professional ResponsibilityAbility to collaborate with external stakeholdersSuperior oral and written advocacy skills and organizational skillsKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESPosition Based Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Excellent written and verbal communication skillsExcellent organizational skills with ability to manage a large workload and meet deadlinesAbility to work both independently and collaborativelyAbility to pay strong attention to detail and think criticallyAbility to respond to crisis and problem solve independentlyHighly motivated with a willingness to work as a team and adapt to the changing needs of the practice and the clientsExcellent computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office programsSupervision Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Ability to lead a small team, including motivating people, managing and assessing work, providing feedback, and solving problemsAbility to schedule, assign, and manage work and resolve problems as neededAbility to manage the work including: assessment of work process and outcomes, gathering relevant information about the work, recommending alternatives, or elevate issues as neededAbility to provide meaningful performance feedback for professional development including having difficult conversations and resolving sensitive employee issuesPursue continuous learning on forms of systemic oppression of marginalized identities and establish team norms and management practices using an equity mindset and informed by inclusive practicesOrganizational Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Commitment to Legal Aid Society's mission to secure equal justice before the law for all New YorkersInterpersonal and communication skills that enable healthy and productive working relationshipsAbility to perform duties with the highest regard for confidentiality, integrity, and respectCommitment to Legal Aid Society's mission and valuesPhysical, environment, travel, and other duties required:Mostly sedentary, significant time using a computer and monitorMay require occasional travel to upstate prisons and around the five boroughsSALARY AND BENEFITS The salary range represents a good faith estimate of the range we expect to pay for this role. The actual salary offered may vary depending on many factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge, skills, and experience, as well as collectively bargained salary steps for unionized roles.
