The Legal Aid Society's Civil Practice is seeking a Supervising Attorney for our Civil Training and Professional Development team to assist with immigration-specific trainings for our Civil Practice, with a particular focus on providing training and professional development to our Immigration Law Unit (ILU). In consultation with ILU management, the Supervising Attorney will take the lead in evaluating current ILU training needs and develop protocols and strategies to respond to changing needs. Applicants should have a demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary practice and decision-making, prior supervisory responsibility, and a strong immigration legal background, including with both affirmative and removal defense case matters. The Immigration Law Unit of The Legal Aid Society is a recognized leader in the delivery of legal services to immigrants in all five boroughs of New York City and surrounding counties within the New York District of the USCIS. The Unit provides low-income New Yorkers with free comprehensive immigration services ranging from deportation defense to adjustment of status to legal permanent residence and citizenship applications. The Unit specializes in the intersection between immigration and criminal law and works collaboratively with all practice areas to serve the society's diverse immigrant clients through a comprehensive service model. Unit staff represent immigrants before USCIS, immigration judges in removal proceedings, and the Board of Immigration Appeals, as well as in federal court on habeas corpus petitions, petitions for review, administrative and judicial appeals, and other matters. ESSENTIAL DUTIESRESPONSIBILITIESSupervision Duties and Management DutiesEnsure accountability and maintenance of practice standardsProvide on-going training and professional development to the Immigration Law Unit (ILU)Collaborate with ILU management to implement litigation strategies based on immigration case law and policy changes that impact ILU's non-citizen clientsCreate practice advisories and trainings on new legislation and other topics relevant to non-citizen clientsDevelop and provide legal and management-related training to ILU managementMonitor the practices of attorneys after mandatory trainings to evaluate how strategies are integrated into practice Assist in the onboarding and mentoring of staff attorneys, paralegals and volunteers, as neededAssist in monitoring and maintaining a high standard of representation and client serviceDevelop skills and knowledge of staff members Work with ILU and other Civil Practice administrative staff, as neededFoster and encourage teamwork and communicationRepresent the Civil Practice and Legal Aid in the communityWork collaboratively with the Civil Practice Training and Professional Development team on major trainings and other projects as they ariseAttend management meetings, participate in management trainings, and utilize current employment policies, practices and guidance as provided by management and Human ResourcesConduct management and supervision practices that affirmatively support equity and inclusion in the workplaceOther duties as assignedProfessional Development and other duties as assignedParticipate in continuous professional developmentContinuously learn about forms of bias in the workplace and demonstrate affirmative behaviors that support an inclusive work environmentOther duties as assignedQUALIFICATIONS Required Qualifications: Admission to NYS Bar preferred, but will consider those who are admitted to any state bar and qualified to practice federal immigration lawAt least 5 years of experience in immigration law, particularly removal defensePreferred QualificationsPrior experience training or teaching on immigration legal topics preferredPrior supervisory experience preferredProficiency in Spanish is desirable, but not requiredKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESPosition Based Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Experience in a wide variety of immigration legal matters, both affirmative and removal defense-relatedKnowledge of the intersection of immigration and criminal law preferredExperience litigating cases in Immigration Court and before the Board of Immigration AppealsDemonstrated commitment and experience in public interest law and civil legal servicesExcellent oral and written advocacy skillsAbility to work in a team setting including strong communication and follow-up skillsExperience working in a fast-paced environmentAbility to manage relationships and effectively communicate with ILU management team and other Civil Practice staffHighly self-motivated and able to work independentlySupervision Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Ability to schedule, assign, and manage work and resolve problems as neededAbility to manage the work including: assessment of work process and outcomes, gathering relevant information about the work, recommending alternatives, or elevate issues as neededAbility to clearly identify roles, responsibilities, delegate tasks and hold people accountableAbility to create and implement effective communication plansAbility to provide meaningful performance feedback for professional development including having difficult conversations and resolving sensitive employee issuesPursue continuous learning on forms of systemic oppression of marginalized identities and establish team norms and management practices using an equity mindset and informed by inclusive practicesOrganizational Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:Commitment to Legal Aid Society's mission to secure equal justice before the law for all New YorkersInterpersonal and communication skills that enable healthy and productive working relationships Ability to perform duties with the highest regard for confidentiality, integrity, and respect Commitment to Legal Aid Society's mission and values Physical, environment, travel, and other duties required:Mostly sedentary, significant time using a computer and monitor; communicating and meeting using video SALARY AND BENEFITSThe salary range represents a good faith estimate of the range we expect to pay for this role.
