Job DetailsJob Location1875 BROADWAY - BROOKLYN, NYPosition TypeFull TimeEducation LevelJuris DoctorSalary Range$80,050.00 - $130,050.00 SalaryyearTravel PercentageNoneJob ShiftDay ShiftJob CategoryLegalDescriptionESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESUnder the general supervision of the Supervising Attorney, the Staff Attorney is responsible for furthering LEAP's mission of providing underserved Brooklyn residents with high-quality, free legal services and assistance designed to preserve safe and affordable housing, and prevent needless homelessness by representing tenants facing illegal or unnecessary evictions, displacement, and tenant harassment. The Staff Attorneywill provide clients with legal advice and representation in housing court, including all facets of the eviction defense andor prevention process. They will value diverse populations, experiences, and backgrounds. Specific duties and responsibilities include: Provide full-scope legal representation to community residents marginalized by poverty, including propounding and responding to discovery, conducting depositions, prepost-trial motions, and trialsRepresent tenants in administrative proceedingsProvide client advocacy with social service organizations, governmental agencies, and other third parties to obtain needed services, and benefits, as necessaryInput and maintain accurate up-to-date case files and tracking informationProvide workshops to tenants and community residents on their housing rights Attend community meetings and eventsAttend staff and case strategy meetingsIdentify systemic problems that affect clients' housing rights and address the challenges through affirmative litigationCOMPETENCIES1-3 years of legal experience preferred Strong work ethic, with the ability to organize and manage time efficientlyAbility to manage diverse activities and meet critical deadlines with minimal supervisionDemonstrated passion for social justice and commitment to working with underserved communitiesAbility to anticipate next steps and problem solveDisplay strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively with a dynamic and diverse teamExcellent legal research, writing, and communication skillsAbility to handle and maintain a large caseloadDemonstrated ability to effectively communicate with individuals from diverse backgrounds and opposing counselAbility to work independently and collaborate with others as neededBilingual EnglishSpanish preferred Knowledge of Public BenefitsEntitlements is preferredEDUCATION EXPERIENCEJuris Doctor degree or Pending AdmissionAdmission to the New York State BarQualificationsIt is the policy of RiseBoro to provide equal employment opportunity to all employees and applicants for employment.
