SALARY $34.055 - $48.651 POSITION SUMMARY Performs electrical engineering projects involving the application of a comprehensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in the operation and maintenance of CTA transit revenue vehicles, service vehicles, and various pieces of shop equipment. Ensures the electrical systems and components of Authority vehicles are functioning optimally and reliably. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES Identifies transit revenue vehicles electrical maintenance problems and provides solutions to prevent major breakdowns, minimize expensive repairs, accidents, fires, and other operating problems that could affect passenger's health and safety. Originates Service Bulletins, Modification Bulletins, and Technical Services Memos to inform personnel on electrical component design changes and updated manufacturers' recommended repair and maintenance procedures. Evaluates vehicle and equipment repair as well as maintenance practices to ensure conformity to the latest manufacturers' recommendations and industry standards. Meets and communicates with vendors to resolve problems involving defective equipment units, parts, and support products. Prepares, reviews and revises electrical schematics and engineering drawings. Designs tools and fixtures that are not commercially available for use in the maintenance and repair of revenue vehicles. Supervises the construction or fabrication of such tools or fixtures and test and issue service instructions for the use of such tools or fixtures. Works with manufacturer representatives to coordinate the installation, testing, and evaluation of new and non-OEM products for possible alternate source and cost savings. Works with Purchasing department personnel to find alternative suppliers of replacement parts that have been discontinued but are essential in the operation and maintenance of revenue vehicles and other equipment. Initiates a first issue request to assign CTA lot numbers. Reviews and revises material specifications based on engineering standards, testing, and actual material dimensional inspections. Makes necessary changes on the specification and recommends its approval to management. Inspects suppliers manufacturing facilities to evaluate if they meet the specified standards to manufacture and capacity to supply the products. May assist in directing lower-level engineers, draftsmen, and technicians in complex electrical engineering assignments. Performs related duties as assigned. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES Reporting to this position may include the following jobs: Job Title NA CHALLENGES Cost reductions Engineering support for vehiclesequipment no longer supported by the OEM. Identifying assessing and incorporating new technology. Managing the process to modify vehicles from initial testing through completion of the modification. EDUCATIONEXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering and approximately 5 years of experience in electrical engineering. Previous extensive experience in the design, repair, and operation of transit vehicles. Must possess a valid Driver's License (DL). When in Rail Maintenance: must be able to obtain current Rail Safety Training certification. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Requires remaining in a stationary position for extended periods of time and constantly operating a computer and other office productivity machinery. Required to physically working on top of, underneath or inside equipment while inspecting and conducting tests. Moving on track elevated structures, in subway tunnels and at grade conditions, after proper safety training. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Good computer skills on word processing, spreadsheet and technical engineering programs. Working knowledge of Auto Cad. Working knowledge of electrical engineering principles, methods, and techniques. Strong verbal and written communication skills. WORKING CONDITIONS General office environment. Exposed to usual vehicle maintenance shop and terminal hazards and conditions, e.g. vehicular noise, dust, grease, moving vehicles, electrified apparatus, or machinery, etc. When in Rail Maintenance: exposed to 600 volt third rails and energized equipment. May be required to work various extended or irregular hours in order to assist in incident investigations or respond to CTA emergencies and service interruptions. Subject to prevailing weather conditions when traveling within the Metropolitan Area when conducting field inspections, investigations and infrastructure assessments of shops, garages, yards, terminals and elevated subway and ballasted track areas adjacent to electrified contact rails and moving vehicles. EQUIPMENT, TOOLS, AND MATERIALS UTILIZED Personal computer and related software, MMIS, Oracle and CAD System, various hand tools, measuring instruments.
