Job DescriptionJob DescriptionA RARE OPPORTUNITY TO BE A PART OF AN EMPLOYEE OWNED COMPANY! SHIPYARD LABORERWill perform general labor work to support marine and shipyard operations. Physical and Mental Job Description:All positions require climbing onto the tops of barges (height of approximately six feet), opening and closing bargelids that weigh up to 125 lbs. (Note: Employees are instructed to seek assistance when lifting heavy objects), andbeing able to walk safely on surfaces that can be wet or snow covered on occasions. Additionally, employees arefrequently required to climb ladders and steps a distance of up to 25 feet and walk long distances throughout thework shift. Walkways are often narrow (approximately 2 feet in width) requiring good balance and coordination.Working areas are tight, enclosed, and do not allow a great deal of space from time to time. All positions requireeffective eye-hand coordination to perform detailed work. All employees must be able to wear personal protectiveequipment including a life vest, safety shoes, clothing, dust mask and hearing protection.Working conditions are frequently dusty with heat and cold extremes according to season. Work surfaces may beslippery and hazardous from time to time. Persons must be able to hear safety signals (such as horns, whistles, andthe human voice), and be able to read and understand safety manuals and other written material such as labels,warnings, gauges and machinery instrumentation.The position requires effective written communication in order to complete required daily reports. Effective verbalcommunication is also necessary in order to allow the individual to give/receive instructions over a radio, loudspeaker or person to person. Knowledge of hand signals will also be required. Position requires the ability toremember and follow established procedures for maintaining and operating various diesel and gas engines,generators, compressors and winches used in the operation.In addition to the above, Welder/Fitter positions involve frequent heavy physical labor including:Operation of arc welders and cutting torches involving repeated bending, squatting, and use of handsand vision to perform detailed cutting and welding. Employees must be able to wear personalprotective devices such as vision, clothing, and head protection;Lifting and carrying steel pieces and fittings weighing 50 to 60 pounds;Sledge hammering and use of other hand held tools.In addition to the general requirements above, Barge Cleaning positions involve frequent heavy physical laborincluding:Lifting, carrying, and placing of pumps weighing up to 125 lbs. (Note: Employees are instructed toseek assistance when lifting heavy objects);Moving and carrying hoses weighing up to 70 lbs. by pulling, tugging, and dragging them longdistances; andLifting buckets of material hand over hand from a standing position.
