Job DescriptionJob DescriptionSalary: $48.52-$55.70 hourly GENERAL SUMMARY:Under the direction of the Manager Technical Operations, the Sr. Substation and Operations Specialist is responsible for operation and maintenance of 2 diesel engines for the Wilkins 5MW power generation facility and department vehicles as well as general maintenance for the substations and generation facilities. Provides technical expertise and training and guidance to coworkers.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Act as technical lead for power generator operation, maintenance, upgrades and repairs. Provide guidance and direction when working with others in areas of expertise. Perform equipment and building maintenance duties involving electro-mechanical troubleshooting, coordinate facilities maintenance to keep generating plants and substations in proper operating order. Recommend and hire qualified vendors for maintenance-related duties. Schedule work by those vendors. Conduct regularly scheduled inspections of operating station equipment and perform preventive maintenance procedures on engines and motors. Replace parts, equipment and components when required. Perform emergency repairs. Test substation batteries to ensure proper operation and perform other substation testing, maintenance and repair activity. Maintain accurate station logs and records. Operate diesel generator on an as needed basis. Operate circuit breakers and other high and low voltage switching devices in conformance with Department procedures and safety regulations. Along with the Manager of Technical Operations, generate written switching orders for planned or emergency maintenance procedures, review written switch orders with line crews and verbally communicate by radio to line crews in the field. Maintain inventory of required parts and coordinate purchase of supplies and parts.OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Fill in with line crews during routine, emergency, or storm situations when needed. Experience with snow removal a plus. May perform maintenance duties for other town departments when required. Perform other duties as required.PREPARATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Duties require high school or trade school education and specialized electrical knowledge plus 5+ years of related experience working with primary and secondary voltage and electrical generation machinery and equipment. Ability to work from schematics and drawings, use hand and power tools and operate heavy equipment. Commonwealth of Massachusetts Commercial Drivers License (CDL Class B) required. Ability to communicate effectively verbally to establish positive public relations for the organization and to interact effectively with others.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:No direct supervision. Train lower-level staff as needed.WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Regular time spent outside subject to weather conditions while inspecting or completing work. Frequent walking, standing, climbing, lifting and occasional requirement for sustained uncomfortable physical positions. Power plant operation involve exposure to high noise and vibration levels from the generators. Generator runtimes average lees that 100 hours per year. . Regularly lifts and moves 50 75 pounds. Exposed to various fuels, cleaners and solvents.
